Vision

Our vision includes our Wellbeing Proposition, a holistic approach to mental health. Its key elements are excellence and responsiveness in patient care; supporting the wellbeing and professional needs of our staff; and providing accessible day therapy and a base for community services.

Working with the community

The Hobart Clinic’s management and staff work closely with other key Tasmanian organisations which provide mental health services.

In addition, the Hobart Clinic continues to build strong relationships with community stakeholders, government and non-government organisations, hospitals, GPs and crisis services.

Links with these organisations mean we are well informed and able to stay at the forefront of Tasmanian health care, to develop new service initiatives in partnership with key groups.

The Clinic also reaches out to the wider community through its sponsorship of Mental Health Week, held in October each year. For more information on Mental Health Week activities, click on: www.dhhs.tas.gov.au/mentalhealth

A history of excellent care

The Hobart Clinic was the first private mental health facility in Tasmania to gain accreditation with the Australian Council on Health Care Standards, and has held accreditation for more than 20 years.

The Clinic continues to excel in continuous improvement of clinical services and was awarded “Excellent Achievement” by the Australian Council on Health Care Standards in 2008.

How the Hobart Clinic was formed

Until 1976 the building and site of what is now the Hobart Clinic, on seven acres of landscaped grounds in Rokeby, was a priory for Anglican monks.

A group including doctors, a psychologist, a social worker and a lawyer then bought the property and established a private psychiatric hospital.

In 1983-84, The Hobart Clinic Association was created and became owner of the Clinic.

The Association comprises 30 members who, every three years, elect a Board of Directors from the membership.

A non-profit mission

The Articles of Association of the Hobart Clinic specifically state that any profits can only be spent either on necessary improvements to the hospital or in support of mental health in the community.

No Association member or Board member has any financial interest in the Clinic. There are no shareholders. The Clinic is truly owned by the community.

In recent years extensive rebuilding and refurbishing has been undertaken, and an exercise track and other activities to enhance physical fitness have been built in the gardens.
