The Hobart Clinic Day Program
The Hobart Clinic's Day programs are designed to provide patients with an evidence based therapeutic program to address specific mental health issues. Patients will receive support, psychoeducation and evidence based therapy (e.g. cognitive behaviour therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, interpersonal therapy) to help them understand, manage and recover from their illness or addiction.
The Day program is suitable for patients who wish to learn skills and techniques to better manage their mental health issue or drug and alcohol problem and achieve a greater sense of personal wellbeing. The Day program is also suitable for patients who have had a recent inpatient stay and want some support as they continue the process of recovery at home. The Day program can assist patients who are trying to prevent a relapse or avoid future hospitalisations.
The Hobart Clinic currently runs the following Day programs:
- Mood Management (including a bipolar support group)
- Anxiety Management
- Relapse prevention for Addictive Behaviours - day or evening sessions
- Mindfulness and Interpersonal Effectiveness
- Social Anxiety Disorder
- General Wellbeing
The Day program operates five days a week with a different range of programs every day of the week.
the Day program also incorporates the adjunctive therapies such as art therapy, gym, tai chi and craft.

Note:- Fridays are now focused on depression management.
Goals of the Day program:
The goals of the Day program are to:-
- Improve psychological wellbeing of all patients in the Day Program
- Educate patients about mental illness and addiction management
- Teach preventative and early intervention skills and relapse prevention
- Facilitate patients to set and achieve their own goals.
How does the Day program work?
From the perspective of the private health funds, the Day program is regarded as a stay in hospital and you are covered the same way for a Day patient hospitalisation as you would be for an inpatient stay. Depending on your health fund's requirements, you will need to attend the Day program for a minimum of four or six hours. Some patients attend one day a week and some attend the program on multiple days. Lunch and morning and afternoon tea is provided.
You need to be admitted to the Day program under the care of one of our treating psychiatrists and you will need a referral from your general practitioner. You will see one of our treating psychiatrists before you commence the Day program and then they will want to see you regularly (at least every ten weeks) to monitor your progress.
Most patients attend the Day program for an average of 12 weeks, but this varies enormously according to clinical need.
The Day program operates five days a week with a different range of programs every day of the week. Whether your problem is anxiety, depression, addiction or trauma, there is a mix of programs that will best suit your needs. An appropriate program timetable for you can be discussed on referral.
Who is the Day program for?
The Day program is suitable for patients who wish to learn skills and techniques to better manage their mental health issue or drug and alcohol problem and achieve a greater sense of personal wellbeing.
The Day program is also suitable for patients who have had a recent inpatient stay and want some support as they continue the process of recovery at home. The Day program can assist patients who are trying to prevent a relapse or avoid future hospitalisations.
The Day program works well for those patients who appreciate the support of other people with similar issues and are happy to share and explore their insights and concerns in small groups that are led by an experienced therapist.
What do our patients say about the benefits of attending the Day program?
