Caring for a person with an anxiety disorder

This program is free of charge for carers. The program runs for three hours a week for eight weeks.

Each session of this program is divided into three sections.

Part A: Each week will cover in depth a topic relevant to the experience of being a carer. Topics are listed below.

Refreshment/Networking Break: As well as having some refreshment this will be an important time for you to meet, and mix with, other people in a similar situation. This is a good way to feel supported.

Part B: This follows a workshop format and will be more interactive. Here you can bring the actual concerns you are experiencing and the types of difficulties you are facing. Our therapists can discuss with you some strategies that may be of help in your situation.

Week 1: Introduction to the program and topics

Week 2: Education about anxiety disorders, the experience of being ill and the medical and psychological therapies that may help

Week 3: How the illness may impact on family and other relationships

Week 4: Introduction to the importance of self-care

Week 5: Continuation of the importance of self-care

Week 6: Effective communication: tips and strategies.

Week 7: Working with challenging behaviours

Week 8: In this week’s workshop we will review what has been covered during the program. We will reflect upon what we have learned and we will identify any areas where further support might be needed and discuss with you how this might be sought.
